5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is an end-product of the trytophan metabolism and It is excreted in urine. It is formed as a result of deamination from serotonin. Serotonin, a powerful smooth muscle stimulant, is produced in large amounts by carcinoid tumors.

Patient Preparation:
• 3-4 days before sample collection, avoid eating of bananas, pineapples, avocados, kiwi fruits, red plums, tomatoes, walnuts, and chocolates.
• At the start of the collection, empty your bladder and discard the first urine.
• Collect all urine passed over the next 24 hours.
• Record the start and end date and time of the collection.
• Keep the urine container refrigerated or stored in an ice chest throughout the collection period.
Notes:
- Specimen must be collected in amber colored urine container.
- For aliquoted sample, please indicate total volume in mL and specific gravity, date and time of start and end of collection.
- For females, urine can be collected in a separate clean container and then carefully poured into the 24‑hour urine collection container.
