Creatinine Clearance

Test Information:
Creatinine Clearance is an indirect method used to assess the glomerular filtration functioning capabilities of the kidneys. It determines how efficiently the kidneys are clearing creatinine from the blood. Timed specimens of both urine and blood must be collected.

Specimen Container:
24 Hour Container (Plain) and Gold Top SST Tube (with clot activator) or Red Top Tube (Plain) 

Specimen Type:
24 Hour and Serum

Required Volume:
10 mL and 2 mL

Patient Preparation:

  • During the start of collection, empty the bladder and discard the first urine output.
  • Collect all the succeeding urine voided in a 24-hour period.
  • Keep the urine container either in a refrigerator or in an ice chest.   

Notes:
Serum specimen must be drawn on the 12th hour (midpoint) or 23rd hour (endpoint) depending on the physician’s request.
