Culture and Sensitivity – Other Specimen without Anaerobic (CSO)

Test Information:
This test aids in isolation and correct identification of respiratory pathogens. It is important in the diagnosis and management of infected patients. Respiratory samples are processed using culture media in order to select the pathogen from the normal commensal flora and depending on the nature of the specimen and patient’s clinical details.

Specimen Container:
Amies Transport Swab or Sterile Container

Specimen Type:
Respiratory samples:
1. Sputum (Induced)
2. ETA
3. Tracheal aspirate

Nasal-oral swab:
1. Throat swab
2. Nasal/nose swab
3. Oral swab

Genito Urinary samples:
1. Vaginal
2. Cervical / cervico-vaginal swab
3. Rectovaginal swab
4. Urethral
5. Penile discharge

Required Volume:
1 to 2 mL

Patient Preparation:
No Patient Preparation

Notes:

  • A preliminary report will be released once a pathogenic organism is isolated in 24 to 48 hours.
  • Sputum sample, preferably early morning (via induction).
  • Other samples; no preparation needed
  • Include in Internal Message: ward, type of specimen, site of collection and special remarks/endorsement.
  • Please indicate Time and Date of Collection.

Storage & Stability
(Before Processing)

  • For Sample in Sterile container:
    Storage: 2 to 8°C
    Stability: 24 hours from the time of collection
  • For samples in swab:
    Storage: 18 – 24°C
    Stability: 24 hours from the time of collection

Transport Temperature:

    Storage: 2 to 8°C
  • For samples in swab:
    Storage: 18 – 24°C
