Metanephrine and normetanephrine, referred as metanephrine, are urinary metabolic products from the catecholamines catabolism pathway. Elevated values are associated with catecholamine-secreting tumors of chromaffin cells.

Patient Preparation:
3-4 days before sample collection, avoid eating banana, pineapple, avocado, kiwifruit, coffee, chocolates, soft drinks, teas, iron medication, drugs w/ Methyldopa/Dopamin, anti-depressants, antibiotics.
- At the start of the collection, empty your bladder and discard the first urine.
- Collect all urine passed over the next 24 hours.
- Record the start and end date and time of the collection.
- Keep the urine container refrigerated or stored in an ice chest throughout the collection period.
Notes:
- Specimen must be collected in amber colored urine container.
- For aliquoted sample, please indicate total volume in mL and specific gravity, date and time of start and end of collection.
- For females, urine can be collected in a separate clean container and then carefully poured into the 24‑hour urine collection container.
