Hepatitis Profile 13

Hepatitis A, B, and C are diseases that work in silence, so routine testing is your best defense. A comprehensive Hepatitis Profile 13 test isn’t just a simple check-up. It’s a vital tool that gives you a detailed picture of your overall liver health and informs you whether you’ve been exposed to the Hepatitis A, B, or C viruses, or if you’re already living with one of them.

The test looks for key markers in your blood, such as:

  • Hepatitis A (IgM and Total): These indicate recent infection or past exposure and immunity.
  • Hepatitis B markers like the surface antigen (HBsAg): This tells you if the virus is currently present. It also checks for antibodies that fought off a past infection (Anti-HBs), and if you’re immune from vaccination. Other markers like Hepatitis B Core Antibodies (Anti-HBc IgM and Total) and e-Antigen/Antibody (HBeAg/Anti-HBe) provide more detail about the stage and infectivity of a Hepatitis B infection.
  • Hepatitis C antibodies (Anti-HCV) and potentially viral RNA (HCV RNA by PCR): These reveal exposure to Hepatitis C and whether there’s an active infection.

What are the Signs and Symptoms?

Hepatitis can be deceitful, usually causing no visible symptoms in the early stages. This “silent” nature is exactly why routine testing is important. When symptoms appear, they can be any of the following:

  • Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or generally lacks energy
  • Nausea and vomiting: Feeling sick to your stomach or actually throwing up
  • Abdominal pain: Discomfort or pain, especially in the upper right side of the belly
  • Dark urine: Urine may look darker than usual, similar to cola
  • Pale stools: Bowel movements may appear lighter in color
  • Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and the whites of your eyes
  • Joint pain: Aches and pains in the joints
  • Loss of appetite: Not feelings hungry most times

It’s also important to note these things:

  • Hepatitis A is typically an acute (short-term) illness. Symptoms, if present, usually appear within a few weeks and resolve. Often, young children will have no symptoms.
  • Hepatitis B and C can become chronic (long-term) infections. In these cases, patients may live for years—even decades—without symptoms, even while the virus is silently damaging their liver. By the time symptoms or chronic liver disease appear, significant liver damage may have already occurred.
